In 2011 The Guardian ranked the University of Hertfordshire among the top 40 UK universities for Computer Science. The University’s School of Computer Science is one of the largest of its kind in the UK, and one of the most established. It has educated thousands of students since the 1960s, laying the foundations for them to go on learning new skills throughout their careers. The School offers a wide range of courses, which blend academic excellence with vocational relevance.

The School’s academic staff are highly qualified, many with extensive experience in research or industry. Students are prepared for professional employment through the School’s links with business, the use of special teaching materials and a placements programme with major employers such as Accenture, GlaxoSmithKline and Sun Microsystems. The School also offers optional industry certification with Cisco CCNA and Oracle OCA.

With access to 13 computing laboratories on the College Lane Campus, the School is equipped with modern hardware and software including specialist facilities for networking and multimedia. All major modern software packages are available, many for downloading onto students’ own PCs. This includes most MS Developer software, through the School of Computer Science’s membership of the Microsoft Academic Alliance.
